My Witopia speeds from youtube are awful. 1 hour at least to load a video. Should I expect better than this? Not worth the $$$ at this speed.

Tech support did not recommend that. However, based on your post I tried it and it does seem better. Still wildly changing download rates but at least it doesnt take hours to get a video in.

I got a free vpn which has very fast speeds from the US. I get video in seconds on youtube. Maybe your internet connection in China is slow?

Try this

http://wiki.personalvpn.net/wiki/VPN_Se ... eed_Issues

An email was also sent out recently from Witopia suggesting a few options for China users.

I found changing the DNS severs very helpful and always connect with LAX. However, I still regularly get the "windows backtrack error occurred" and have to reconnect after a few minutes.

Good luck.

Does Witopia has anything to do with Wikipedia ?

Why Google doesn't start with a VPN service ?

My net connection here in Shanghai is actually quite good. That is until I connect to Witopa.

Secret. Sorry. I already learned what happens when you tell others about free VPNs, SSL secure or not, they get blocked. Sent a link of my last find to mkkrawks, and poof, it stopped working! So it's taken me a few months to find another... I'm not sure if this guy was a government hack, or if he just distributed it to a bunch of others and the GFW noticed it and blocked it. But, as they say (not Bush btw), "Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me".

I would definitely check which gateway you are using. You could also contact witopia support - they are very responsive.

^^If I can find a good reliable free VPN, so can you! And I'm sure if it took you 3 months to find it after your last free one was blocked after giving it away, you too wouldn't be gung-ho to give it to others!

Stop being lazy arses!

Witopia isn't working for me tonight. A friend had a similar problem. I can connect to the service, but websites never load. Is anybody else seeing this problem?

System may have had a burp. Facebook wasn't loading for me so I closed the browser, waited a few moments and tried again...and loaded.

I checked my list of DNS servers. There was one there that I didn't recognize (and it wasn't one of Witopia's). I manually added the DNS servers to my computer, and it works fine now.

If anybody has a similar problem, question 5 in the page below outlines how to do this:

Well, KalanStar is local buttclown. Answering in the thread about problem that he "knows" how to resolve, but do not actually tell how (like anything related to Xbox 360, am I right?). What a d*ckhead.

About this problem:

Some filthy chinese stole ~200m of copper wire of backbone between China-Hong Kong, so traffic is routed through Japan-Taiwan-Hong Kong with high latency and lot of hops, basicly East Cost of US is much better now compared to Hong Kong, I think it will take few month for China and Hong Kong to resolve this issue (rebuild copper cable backbone connection and fix routes).

Anyway 4Mbps is more than enough to watch 720p YouTube videos for me. Much less than my connection, but good anyway.

I've found the Witopia HK 443 gateway to be pretty fast recently.

Maybe they fixed backnone already? I recieved message about stolen copper cable in mid-may from my VPN provider, not Witopia though.

P.S.
Free UltraSurf and UltraVPN are still working in China.
