China Mobile - No 4G

China Mobile - No 4G

Postby Asmaradana » Thu Feb 04, 2016 6:18 pm

Hello tech savvy people,

I have a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge that I bought in Malaysia. I recently moved back to Shanghai and is using China Mobile as my mobile phone provider. I checked with them and they told me that since my phone isn't bought here I cannot get 4G internet, the best is 2G. I've used the same phone in Dubai and Bangkok and never faced this problem. Is there anything I can do? If I switch to China Unicom will it be the same?

Thank you.

In China they feel it's necessary to use their own version of 4G

TDD LTE rather than FDD-LTE in most of the world, so yes you can't use that phone on China's 4G network.

Some versions of phones bought in HK can be used on both FDD and TDD (LG and iphone models that i have used, am sure there are more)

I just ordered an unlocked Galaxy S6 SM-G920F, the "international version," to be picked up when I'm in the US next week. I checked the LTE freqs and bands listed on the phone's specs and the ones listed in this link, and there are two or three that should work, depending on the network. We shall see.

TDD-LTE is also used in quite a few other Asian countries (totally 21 countries). Many phones bought outside of China support it. It's possible the China Mobile person was an idiot.

Looks like the 'international' S6 doesn't support TDD-LTE

Yes, but it supports the bands 1(2100) and 5(850) FDD which China Telecom has, and 3(1800) FDD which China Unicom has.

Hey guys,
All very helpful info. Goes to show, we learn new things every day. My S6 Edge has these specs SM-G925F Global FDD-LTE+WCDMA+GSM

A friend bought the same phone but the China (Hong Kong) version last Dec and she got it a whole lot cheaper than what I paid for mine as well.
SM-G9250 China (Hong Kong) SIM1:TDD-LTE+FDD-LTE+WCDMA+TD-SCDMA+GSM;SIM2:GSM

Just got back from the China Unicom office. 4G indeed works on my new Sumsang. Blazing speeds right up until I want to connect to something good. I would have posted a screenshot for all you naysayers, but #shex.

I might be switching to China Unicom. I can start and finish a meal before anything loads properly. Shitty internet at home. Shitty mobile internet.

China Mobile has its own but Unicom uses common bands so you don't need a special phone. This is the whole reason many China Mobile iPhone customers either had to switch to Unicom for 4G (which I did) or just use their iPhones with EDGE or 2G until Apple and China Mobile finally agreed to have specially made China Mobile iPhones. My wife held out so she has a social iPhone that works on China Mobile's 4G network.

The electronic building in Caoxi lu close to the Metro city Shopping mall and the big hotel in the corner of Dong An lu and or the building on the corner of Huai Hai Lu and Xi zhang nan lu
You can buy phones with different country of origin , Just make sure they work in all the countries you want .
HK I phone version for example will not work in the US .
Turn it on and look under regulatory information

My Singapore-bought S7 works just fine on China Mobile (no problems with 4G).

You should check the bands supported before buying a new phones or switching to a new network provider. 4G phones are not created equal. https://onlineshoppingkenya.com/7-best-cheap-4g-lte-phones-kenya/
