Explosion Rocks Jiangsu Kindergarten, Death Toll Unknown

By Ben Cost

An explosion rocked the Chuangxin Kindergarten in Xuzhou, Jiangsu, injuring at least a dozen people, according to reports. Witnesses have reported casualties but the official death toll is still unknown.

The blast occurred at around 4:50pm, just as parents were picking up their children from school. Video footage and pics show both adult and kid victims lying on the ground, some with singed clothing and blood covering their bodies.

Said a local business owner, “About 5pm, we heard a blast and thought it might have been a gas explosion at a nearby food vendor."

It was unclear whether the blast was an accident or deliberately caused although local newspaper Xiandaikuaibao reports that it was sparked by a bottle of cooking gas.

A Xuzhou committee member said all of the injured are currently undergoing medical treatment and an investigation is underway. More updates to follow.
