Shoppers Killed After Shanghai Supermarket Floor Collapses
Three people were killed and a further six injured after a supermarket floor collapsed in Pudong on Saturday morning.
The owner of the Jiadele store on Wanxia Road has since been taken into police custody as an investigation is conducting to figure out why the floor collapsed in the first place. According to several nearby store owners, the floor had been added illegally by the owner, Chen and was used mainly for storage. Locals suspect that too many goods were stacked up on the floor causing it to cave and drop on unsuspecting shoppers below.
Rescue operations were swiftly underway on Saturday morning, and seven people had been pulled from the rubble by midday. Unfortunately one of them later passed away at Pudong People's Hospital after emergency treatment. The other six are in a stable condition. Two others had been found dead in the rubble later that afternoon.
Shanghai is full of illegal constructions such as rooftop apartments and floors added illegally without permission such as the one which caused this accident. The government has been recently cracking down on illegal buildings, targeting such areas in central areas and suburbs earlier in the year for renovation or demolition. Most likely this incident will push government officials to inspect buildings further in the suburbs for illegal construction.
